The day is often filled with parades and exhibitions across the country. Happy Independence Day, Bangladesh!
This official holiday is always celebrated on March 26. The holiday celebrates Bangladesh's declaration of independence in 1971. It is a national holiday of Bangladesh.
In 1947, India was partitioned by the British, creating the "Dominion of Pakistan" consisting of two separate territories in northwestern and northeastern India. The new government was ruled by West Pakistan, causing friction between the two regions, with the first signs of an autonomy movement in East Pakistan appearing in 1949.
In the 1970 general election, the Bangla-based Awami League led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman won the general majority, but the West Pakistani regime was reluctant to give up power. On March 25, 1970, Pakistani troops were deployed to quell the growing unrest.
This led to the Bangladesh Declaration of Independence by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 26 March 1971, marking the start of the War of Independence. In November 1970, India entered the war and supported East Pakistan. This resulted in the victory of East Pakistan on 16 December 1970 (commemorated on Victory Day).
After independence, East Pakistan changed its name to Bangladesh.
The holiday is celebrated with a memorial service in memory of those who died in the Revolutionary War. At night, the most important public buildings in the capital Dhaka are illuminated in national colours.
