April 6 has a special significance in the political history of the country.  The Bharatiya Janata Party was established on this day in 1980.  This new party was born out of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founded by Syama Prasad Mookerjee in 1951.

April 6 has a special significance in the political history of the country.  The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was established on this day in 1980.  This new party was born out of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founded by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in 1951.  After the declaration of Emergency in 1977, Jana Sangh merged with many other parties and the Janata Party emerged.  The party snatched power from the Congress in the 1977 general elections and in 1980, the Janata Party was dissolved and the foundation of the Bharatiya Janata Party was laid.
