Sarnath located near Varanasi is considered to be a revered place.  It is believed that Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon at this place.  He preached the religion and founded a monastic community association in the region.  One of the famous stupas at this place is situated in Dhamek Stupa (128 feet high).  Apart from this, there are also the remains of Ashoka Pillar.  This place is also the oldest site museum of the Archaeological Survey of India, which displays artefacts from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD.

It is one of the four major Buddhist pilgrimage sites. It also houses the famous Bodhi tree. After which Prince Siddhartha got enlightenment and he became Gautam Buddha. There are also monasteries of several sects of Indian Buddhism, including Bhutanese, Taiwanese, Bangladeshi, Thai and Tibetan.
